First Year Apprenticeship Program

We are continuing with the 9-month apprenticeship program this coming year! We will spend the year together in the classroom, garden, field, and online. Students will learn the essentials of herbalism in great detail, working hands-on with medicinal herbs, making a complete apothecary, and learning the art and science of plant medicine, botany, physiology, chemistry and more. We will learn about dozens of plants during the program, working intimately with 3 profoundly healing herbs each month, while finding specific plant allies that speak more deeply and completely to us and building a closer relationship to them.

Each month we will combine lecture/intensive learning with hands-on medicine-making, growing, harvesting, plant identification, field work and theory. Outside of class, students will be expected to complete assignments including continued medicine-making, building their own materia medica, and expanding and deepening their knowledge of, and comfort with, practicing herbal medicine.

This program is designed to teach people how to use herbs intelligently, effectively and safely on a personal level. When the program is completed, participants will be able to use herbs for themselves, families and friends, but will also have a strong foundation from which to pursue a profession in the herbal realm, by becoming a practitioner or teacher, a gardener, a business owner, or by expanding an existing practice (body work, pharmacy, energy work, etc) to encompass another complementary modality.

Classes take place at The Green Wisdom School of Herbal Studies in Long Beach, with some additional work online.
Those who successfully complete all the course requirements will receive a certificate of completion.

There are two tracks available per program, a weekend track with Saturday and Sunday classes, and a weekday track with Wednesday classes, in order to accommodate the high numbers of people who want to participate.

Classes meet in person twice a month, the first class from 10 am to 4 pm, and another class from 9-noon.
There is an additional online lecture/discussion component, from 7-9 pm on 1 Wednesday evening each month.

COST
A deposit of $150 is required to secure your place in class. Class size is limited and expected to fill up very quickly. 

Payment in full by the first day of class: $1,600 ($1,750 total for course).

There are a limited number of opportunities for work-trade positions which allow for a reduced fee of $1,250 total ($150 deposit, $1,100 balance due). Work Traders must be available for 5 additional hours of work at the school each month, and must be able to come in early to assist in set up, or stay late for tear-down of classes. Work traders must have reliable transportation and online access.

Additional Costs: Tuition includes all instructional time, additional online and in-person support, and an apothecary kit of herbs and supplies needed for medicine making. Additional cost to students include travel and food for field trips, additional herbs and apothecary supplies, and text books.

Apothecary Kit: full Materia Medica (collection of all of the herbs used in this course): 1 to 2 ounces each of all herbs studied in class, dried, organically grown or ethically sourced. Some herbs are not appropriate for use as dried plant, and will be available in 1 ounce tinctures. Bottles, jars, and specialized ingredients needed for medicine making. These kits will be available for pick up at Green Wisdom, or may be shipped to you for $10.

Deposit Policy: To secure your space in the program, a deposit of $150 is required at the time of registration. If we are not able to guarantee you a space in the program, your deposit will be refunded promptly.

Refund policy:  Refunds less the deposit are given if students drop within 30 days of first class.  There are no refunds on tuition payments after the first month even if the student is no longer in attendance.

Missed classes: There are no refunds for missed classes. There may be some opportunities for makeup days for specific classes, but this is not guaranteed. The responsibility of attending each class rests solely upon the student. If a class needs to be rescheduled due to extenuating circumstances (weather, world events, illness), all efforts will be made to ensure replacement dates that are accessible to the majority of students.
 
Late Payments: If a payment is missed, the student may not attend classes until the account is up to date. Missed classes are not refunded, and payment is still due in full. Continued late payments will result in student being released from the apprenticeship, with no refunds.
